Fishing in and around Vancouver BC

British Columbia boasts a 27,000km coastline, more than 25,000 lakes, and countless rivers, streams and creeks. That’s a lot of fish territory and a lot of happy anglers.

The most popular catches include the five varieties of salmon – Chinook, Coho, Sockeye, Chum and Pink sturgeon - the largest fresh water species in North America, steelhead and trout.

In all there are around 80 native varieties of fresh water fish hoping to evade your line.


Close to Vancouver
The Capilano River on the North Shore is a favoured local spot for Chinook and Coho. The salmon runs last from mid-June to November and with a location just the other side of Lions Gate Bridge, it’s the ideal spot for those with little time to spare.

Howe Sound, which runs from West Vancouver up to Squamish, offers all varieties of salmon during the summer. Charters are available in Vancouver at Granville Island and Coal Harbour and from Horseshoe Bay close to the ferry terminal.

Outside Vancouver
Fishing in and around Vancouver BC The Fraser River and its tributaries offer some of the best fresh-water fishing opportunities in BC. Head for the Fraser Valley an hour east of Vancouver on Highway 1 and check out rivers such as the Fraser, Harrison and Vedder for huge salmon runs, steelhead, cutthroat trout and 500kg sturgeon.

For the full-on fish experience, there are plenty of licensed guides and outfitters and numerous resorts ranging from a few rustic cabins on a quiet lake to tony resorts only accessible by float plane.

Before you dash off to sample BC’s legendary waters you’ll need to get yourself a salt or freshwater license. Price depends on your residency or visitor status but they can be purchased online and are widely available in sporting goods stores, gas stations, marinas, resorts, outfitters etc.
